Mothers of children with autism supporting each other in the DFW metroplex!
Our Story
We are first and foremost a support group for moms and primary female caregivers caring for children and adults on the autism spectrum in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. What started in 2014 as a group text between six moms of newly diagnosed littles that met online has now grown into a private facebook community of almost 8,000 members. AUsome Moms was originally created so we could organize our Mom’s Night Out dates and playdates. We continue to do that, but we have grown to be so much more than that, too. We found that there were so many moms out there that needed the same thing we did! So, we have continued to grow and grow.
Our facebook group has become a safe space for moms to seek advice from other moms who have been through what they are going through. It’s a space for moms to share their victories with other moms who get that what might seem like a small milestone is actually a big deal. It’s a safe space for moms who are struggling because their kids are struggling to be open and honest and vulnerable with their struggles and be uplifted by other moms who have been there. For many, the online group is a lifeline. It’s also a place where friendships are formed via our monthly moms night out. Every month we meet at different restaurants around the metroplex and that allows moms to connect in person with other moms and have their cups filled. This sense of community is why AUsome Moms is dedicated to keeping things local.
On top of being a support group, AUsome Moms is also a non profit. It is run by all volunteers, we don’t take a salary or receive any benefits. We do this because we also obviously have kids on the spectrum, but we remember what it’s like to be newly diagnosed and overwhelmed. We know what it’s like to constantly fight for services. We know what it’s like to deal with self injury and aggression. We know how easy it is to self doubt and despair. But we also know how impactful it is to have a community lift you up and bring light to what seems like a dark hole, and we want to make sure no moms get stuck in that hole. That’s why we’re here.
Through our non profit, we fundraise all year long to host two big FREE sensory friendly family events a year. Our swim party in the summer and our Holiday party in December. We have also sponsored numerous scholarships over the years. With our very first giveaway being in October 2018 with just a few dollars to our name, we gave away 5 weighted blankets and 3 kindles in time for Christmas. Since then, we have given away safety kits for families with elopers, we did an Angel Tree, provided ABA grants, sensory bundles, COVID grocery grants, meal trains, back to school grants, and now provide annual swim scholarships. AUsome Moms has poured over $50k back into the group. Not bad for a local grass roots group.
Giving back to our community is fundamental. Naturally, we want our moms to be aware of all of the resources available to them and their families. For this reason, we held our first ever annual autism resource fair in 2018. While we started with a modest 23 vendors, we have grown this event and nearly tripled its size. Every year we welcome a variety of vendors, such as ABA clinics, speech and OT providers, summer camps, and other Autism non-profits. We also have an educational guest speaker series, where local providers offered tips and advice on topics that YOU MOMS wanted to hear about.
Finally, part of our mission is to serve moms. So our non profit has allowed us to hold free mom only events. But why are these mom only events so important? There was a study done by Boston University that looked at stress levels of mom’s to children on the autism spectrum. “The study found that stress hormones appeared in extremely low levels in mothers of Autistic children, levels similar to chronic stress situations, like soldiers in combat.” Now while we cant waive a wand and erase your stress, trust us, we wish we could, we can provide a much needed night off. The goal of these events is to fill your cups and help you connect in person with moms who get it. From craft days and painting events, Mother’s Day tea, to our annual ugly christmas sweater dinner, and The Mommies, these events are our chance to spoil you!
